John Mayer Interview from “Guitar Magazine” Aug.2021

John Mayer has said in past interviews that he felt and learned a lot from Dominic Miller’s playing.

This statement is part of a longer interview with John Mayer that appeared in the August 2021 issue of Guitar Magazine.
John Mayer seems to dislike interviews, but he has a strong affinity with Japan, probably because he studied there during his high school years.
So the magazine has a special 10-page interview with John Mayer that is a must-read for John Mayer fans. He talks about a wide range of topics.

In the interview, when asked about music that has inspired him lately, John replies:
“Lately, when I listen to music, I often think about if I would do more it. But recently I heard Dominic Miller, who plays guitar in Sting’s band, and his guitar playing on ‘I’m So Happy I Can’t Stop Crying’ and for the first time in a long time I was inspired by music. He made me feel so many things in one song and I was very impressed. I urge you to listen to his playing.

The song is a country-tinged track from Sting’s “Mercury Falling”(1996) album.
However, Dominic Miller’s country rendition is very different from a typical country song. Anyone who hears this song will probably immediately think, ‘Oh? What’s this? Dominic’s greatest assets – his unique sense of colour, intricate chord work, harmonies and arpeggios – make this a truly beautiful song. Dominic’s take on the song adds modernity and sophistication without sacrificing the rustic essence of country music, making the song irresistible.

Dominic has listened to a lot of American folk music. However, he once said.
“I am a little less good at playing country than other styles. Of course, if I wanted to imitate it, I could.” Still, Dominic is an amazing musician, praised by a guitarist like John Mayer.

I don’t play guitar, so I don’t know the details, but I can feel similarities between Dominic’s playing on this song and John Mayer’s own playing on his country albums and on the classic ‘NEON’.

John also said later. “The key to originality is definitely the songwriting!”
It’s the same thing Dominic always says. After all, regardless of guitar technique, ‘the song, the composition is king’.
