「Shape of My Heart」の混乱が平和的に収束 Shape of My Heart’s chaos ended peacefully.
Recently, Dominic posted a short video of himself performing ‘Shape of My Heart’ with a man. When I first saw this video I thought, “Really!?” But after being surprised, I couldn’t help but laugh. At first I thought it was an AI or some kind of synthetic video. However, apparently, when we asked the Japanese people around us, many of them did not quite understand who the man Dominic is performing with in this video is. So I would like to explain a little more about how Dominic came to post this short video, starting from the beginning.
when things come full circle 🥹
The fuss began with this short video.
Dominic Miller Plays “Shape of My Heart” Wrong? #guitar #sting #shapeofmyheart #shorts
それとも「Every Breath You Take」になるのかな?
Here’s a brief description of the flow. A series of fuss started with this short video.
A short video of an interview with Rick Beato and Dominic is out.
Became a hot topic of conversation about who the man was who released the video saying outrageous things to Dominic.
Rumours spread that it was probably Paul Davids who released the video.
But Paul denied: ” It’s not about me because I didn’t say in my video what Dominic said in the video.
Next, the full interview between Rick Beato and Dominic was released. In it Dominic said that “the video’’s man” was a “Dutch Guy” and it became clear that he was referring to Paul Davids.
Paul has a large number of subscribers to his YouTube channel, so some commenters appeared to say that it was a shame that a great musician like Dominic was upset with one YouTuber, even though Paul had never said such a thing.
For those who are disappointed, Dominic’s fans like me said,”Should watch the whole interview. Dominic was not at all upset with Paul and was very pleased that so many people tried so hard to play the song well”.
The matter had stopped in the above state of affairs. Two months have passed since then and I thought that was the end of the story. But let me first explain why this has caused such confusion.
I will elaborate on the conversation Dominic has in the short video at the beginning of ①
DM:See that’s the problem chord.
Rick:It’s so awkward to play that.
DM:I gotta tell you a funny story about this. Because I saw one of these videos. The headline of the video which showed up on my feed. And it said ‘Sting’s most “iconic” riff’. Turn on the video and it’s ‘Shape of my Heart’ (LoL). OK, he said, “Oh, but the guy who plays it live doesn’t play that chord live. He takes the easy way out.”doesn’t play that chord live. He takes the easy way out.” And I’m thinking,REALLY? And then I thought, that’s not true, but then actually it is true. If you’re standing playing that is really difficult it is. So I Modified it to go.(Play) I took it personally. First of all, “The guy who plays it live is playing it wrong”.
Rick:The guy who plays it live wrote the lick.
DM:Yeah, But now I’m playing it correctly. But it’s so difficult. I REALLY struggling. I’m only doing it because I want that guy to see the video
First this short video came out, “Who is saying these crazy things in the video?” and people started talking about it.
The song was written by Dominic and lyrics by Sting. So it is wrong to say that it is ‘Sting’s most “iconic” riff’, and Dominic is not “the guy who just plays this song live”. Also, the man in the video seems to state that “the guy who plays this song live does it the easy way”, which led to people talking about how “some guys say crazy things”. And soon it was rumoured that the distributor of the video Dominic was referring to was probably Paul Davids and that this was the video.
But as you can see from this thumbnail, it says “STING’S MOST COPIED RIFF” here.
It’s already different from what Dominic is saying from here. And also if you watch the video properly, Paul said that “Dominic Miller is the composer of this song”, and not saying that Dominic is just a guy who plays it live.
So, did Dominic slightly misremember this video of Paul, or is he exaggerating his story, or, no, is it actually not Paul’s video, but someone else’s? There was a lot of speculation. First Paul himself said “I don’t think it’s me because I didn’t say that”.
And later, the full long interview with Rick Beato and Dominic, mentioned in ⑤, was uploaded to YouTube. Various details were revealed in this interview.
At the beginning of this video, Rick begins his story this way.
Rick:Dominic welcome. Hello. We were just talking about the fact that people play Shape of My Heart incorrectly on YouTube.
DM:I’m happy that people are trying to work it out. I wasn’t really trying to work it out when I came up with it. But one of those things it. So it’s there’s a lot of little nuances in it. That it’s not really that important. To be honest with you, but if people are gonna educate and say “this is the way it’s done well”, then, at least get it right. (…)
(2:16)The problem with that chord, I’m just I got to tell you a funny story. Because I saw one of these videos that you’re talking about is some Dutch guy who’s I think he’s got a lot of followers or something and he’s very good guitarist and a good educator. But first of all I saw the headline of the video which showed up on my feed. And it said “Sting’s most iconic riff”. And I thought well. I was interested to see. What that might be up is it ‘Roxanne’? Is it going to be ‘Every Breath You Take’? And I’m genuinely intrigued. So I turn on the video, and it’s ‘Shape of My Heart.’(lol) Okay, first of all, that’s a mistake. So I thought I want to see this video. So then he’s going on and on with the video saying talking about the song and everything. And I’ll go. Okay well, that’s okay. I don’t really mind because why should I really care you know. It’s not that important.
Then he’s talking about this, how difficult it is these codes. He says; “but ‘the guy who plays it live’ it doesn’t play that chord live, because it’s a very awkward chord to play. He doesn’t do it live. He go he doesn’t. A variation he takes.”
Rick: He takes the easy way?
DM:“He takes the easy way out”. I’m thinking “really”? Then I thought that’s not true, but then actually it is true. Because the thing is that chord it’s almost impossible to play if you’re standing. Sitting down is it’s okay off course. But if you’re standing playing that is really difficult. So I modified it to go. (PLAY) This is what I play it like that.((For actual instructions on how to make the change, see this article.)
Rick: So which is nice too.
DM:I got really I took it personally. I thought first of all the guy who plays it live is playing it wrong.
Rick: The guy who play set live wrote the lick.
DM:But now I’m playing it correctly. But it’s so difficult and I’m really struggling. Standing up and I am playing it the right way. But it’s like I’m only doing it because I want that guy to see the video.
It was clear that Dominic’s words starting with “Dutch guy…” were Paul. In fact, in his videos, Paul points out that Dominic does not play the song or hold the chords in the same way in live performances as in the original. He also wondered if Dominic had changed the tuning of the song as he could not make out the chords on Dominic’s fingers in the “red wall video”. He said something like that. But basically he didn’t say anything to undermine Dominic.
This has a slightly different nuance to Dominic’s story in the short video. So, after watching the first short video, there were also comments like, “It’s a shame that a wonderful and humble guitarist like Dominic gets so angry at a one YouTuber.”
But if you watch Rick Beato’s long interview with Dominic, of course he is not angry with Paul. Dominic says this;
DM:(9:08) But it’s fine. All these things are it’s all fine. I’m really cool with it and even the YouTube educator, he just didn’t get his like this details correct. But it doesn’t really matter what I mean I’m quite happy and I’m really just happy that people want to play that song and to teach it. To show people how to play because it’s a little bit tricky and so it’s great if people want to well this.
Two months have passed since then. The issue had become ambiguous, but I thought it was over. Out of this state of affairs, they suddenly uploaded a video the other day (the top video) and it made me laugh because they both look so happy. I was worried about Dominic because he was a bit misunderstood, but they both look really happy and I think this problem ended peacefully(lol). But would a musician as awesome as Dominic normally do this? After all, the original composer and performer of the song, Dominic Miller himself, personally taught him how to play it properly. I envy Paul!
I think this video shows a very calm and friendly side of Dominic. And I’m very happy because I don’t think I’ve seen him smile like that for a long time. He’s 63 years old now, but when he smiles like that and when he plays the guitar, he still shows a boyish innocence. I think that’s part of his charm.
Finally, I would like to add what Dominic says in the part of his interview with Rick about the ‘Shape of My Heart’.
Rick: You just did the ultimate tutorial right there. That was the proper tutorial done by the person that wrote it.
DM:Did I? (9:46) But I could get into more detail. But it’s just really is the thing with all these things trick is just to approach it slowly.Because if you do it slowly like this, you’ve got a chance of kind of getting it right. And just get the sound of it.
Rick: And just get the sound of it.
DM:Because everyone’s in a rush with all riffs myself included. You hear a great riff and you want to just play it. But no one’s really thinking about the sound. And it’s difficult to make a guitar sound good that’s what we strive for as guitarists. I mean I’ve seen people that you’ve interviewed they talk about the same thing. It’s like what is the sound. You know right.
This is excellent advice that shows the musician Dominic’s attitude to his music.
